Pallet Manufacturing

As the largest manufacturer of new pallets in New Hampshire, HHP’s pallet facility excels at high efficiency production of standard and customized hardwood pallets. Each year HHP ships 1,300 trailer loads of pallets—about 600,000 pallets—to manufacturers throughout the Northeast. Nearly a third of the lumber needed to manufacture the pallets is produced by HHP’s sawmill in the milling of its high-grade lumber, while the rest is purchased from outside sources.

HHP makes pallets according to more than 400 specifications in our 30,000 square-foot pallet shop. A Pendu cut-off and gang saw system produces most of the pallet lumber from hardwood cants, which is then pulled, sorted and stacked by a crew of three to four. Hardwood boards move through an unscrambler and rollcase to a pop-up saw where they are cut to length and then conveyed to a 12-foot turntable to be sorted and stacked and ultimately re-sawn. Two computerized Viking pallet nailer systems are used for automated assembly, while specialty pallets and small volume orders are assembled by hand with pneumatic nailing tools.

Common pallet sizes include 48" x 40," 44" x 44,"  48" x 42" and 48" x 36". However, HHP builds custom pallets up to 125 inches long and fills orders for as few as 5 to 10 pallets.

All pallets designated for export are heat-treated, certified and stamped in compliance with the International Standard for Phytosanitary Measures, or ISPM-15. As part of the certification process, which requires that participants enroll with an inspection agency accredited by the American Lumber Standard Committee, HHP has chosen the National Hardwood and Lumber Association as its auditing agency. Our heat-treating facilities are certified monthly by the New England Lumberman’s Association. We can provide mixed shipments of heat-treated and non-heat-treated pallets in full trailer-loads and less than full trailer-loads.

Pallet production is based on real-time customer orders as well as anticipating customer near-term needs. HHP takes pride in providing quick turnarounds by having our customers’ most common sizes in stock at our warehouse, ready to ship as needed via HHP’s fleet of rolling stock dedicated to pallet deliveries.

As with the sawmill, there’s virtually no waste in the pallet shop, thanks to its chipping, sawdust and firewood activities. The synergistic relationship between the three primary aspects of our business—our hardwood sawmill, roundwood ship plant and our pallet manufacturing facility—also enables HHP to streamline operations and cut costs while ensuring a steady flow of raw material and finish product.

As an active member of the National Wooden Pallet & Container Association, NWPCA we have access to products, services and programs that assist us in better serving our customers.
